Description : Japan Keen for $22 million project at Alang A high-level delegation of Japan’s ship owners’ association met Hon’ble Chief Minister Narendra Modi on 13th February, 2012. The delegation expressed eagerness to begin the Ja-pan government’s project on Alang-Sosiya ship yard. The pro-ject will turn the Alang-Sosiya shipyard into a safe and eco-friendly yard at par with international norms. The project will be funded by the Japan government. Alang ship recycling yard is Asia’s biggest shipyard with recycling of about 400 ships annually. Japan has a 40% share in the world’s shipping industry and is highly dependent on China for recycling of ships. The Industries department of Japan government (METI) has carried out a study, according to which the Alang-Sosiya can be transformed into a better shipyard if it is made safer and eco-friendly as per the guidelines of a convention of International Maritime Organization held in Hong Kong.
